Basic Issue

What makes sock yarn different from other yarn?

Sock yarn is usually finer than other types of yarn, often classified as fingering weight, which allows for the creation of tight, dense stitches needed for durable socks. It’s also commonly blended with nylon or other synthetic fibers to enhance strength, making it more resistant to the friction that socks endure.

For an average adult pair of socks, you will need approximately 100 grams of sock yarn. If you are making larger or longer socks, you may need more yarn. Sock yarn is often sold in 100-gram skeins, which is typically enough for one pair.
